CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Our statements to the feds went far more smoothly than they would have without the arrival of the Grey Ma’am, as Rosie was now calling her. The whole thing was very civil, and we even managed to glean a little information from them.

The feds had indeed been aware that Jules had disappeared, but apparently, they needed permission to break into someone’s house and set up spycams. With Jules missing and a witness rather than a suspect, they’d put their resources into trying to find her instead of watching her house.

They’d also been looking for Viktor, of course, but had been unable to locate him before us. We learned that the car he was driving was owned by another front company, and they hadn’t figured out where he had been living yet, either. Viktor had largely been a ghost, and now… well, as Rosie said, he was actually a ghost.

We knew the killer was the woman we called Gabriella, but the motive for killing one of their top guys was hazy. We asked the feds if they were trying to flip him, but they assured us that wasn’t the case; they hadn’t been able to find him to do so.

While Stone had joined the team, we were about ready to call it for the day. By the time we finished statements for the FBI and homicide, and finished chewing things out with Emily and Elwood, it was getting close to dinner time.

We got straight back into it the next morning when Brandy arrived at the suite with a whole bag full of cat toys, cat snacks, and a fancy new cat bed for her.

“I’ll help by looking after Snowy,” she declared, daring us to ask her to do anything else. We didn’t.

Snowy and Brandy were obsessed with each other, and although Rosie felt a little left out, she knew it would only be a passing infatuation. Snowy would tire of Brandy before long and then dismiss her. I hoped Brandy would be okay with the rejection.

While Brandy and Snowy played, Stone, Rosie, and I got back to work on the case. The person we wanted to speak to next was Jared “Jazz Hands.” Rosie worked on her computer while Stone and I thought very hard and drank coffee.

As usual, it didn’t take too long for Rosie to find something, but when she did, she didn’t immediately tell us what it was. Instead, she continued clicking around Facebook on the computer while simultaneously zooming around Instagram on her phone.

Around nine-thirty, I asked her for a status report. With Stone standing next to me, I sat in the office chair next to Rosie. “So what’s up?”

“I found him. I think.”

“I feel like there’s a but.”

“Yeah. There’s a but.”

“Go on…”

“His real full name is Jared Mitchell Malone. But the thing is, I don’t think he’s Stiralshiki, at least not anymore. He’s got a job. Like, a real one.”

“How real are we talking?”

“He works at a gym, not far from here, as a trainer.
